Cycle of Socialization

Our class should be a space where we share our own ideas, which are rooted in our experiences. You should not be afraid of saying the wrong thing or feel ashamed if you share something that is corrected because it is an opportunity to learn.

However, we won't have the opportunity to learn if we don't lean into our discomfort and  engage in conversations dealing with race, ethnicity, gender, class, etc.

We have worked to build a meaningful community in our class and will continue building one. This allows us to have these conversations. Trust that we will all support each other in this space.

One last thing, if at any point in these conversations something is said that doesn't feel or sit right with you acknowledge those feelings. Don't push them aside. When you feel this way there are a few things you can do:

(a) Come talk to me
(b) Talk with a trusted adult
(c) Share out in that moment*

*When sharing out be sure to challenge the idea not the person. How?
- What do you mean by that? vs That's not right.

Also, if you're interested in reading the article where the cycle came from, you can find it here.
